English Text April 2000 NL Trip: Going North Nederlandse Text

On April 20th we went up north to visit with Opa (Henk) and join the reunion on coming Wednesday. On our way up there, we visited several sites. To start with, the Deer and (Really good tasting this time...) poffertjes. We were very lucky. The weather was GREAT and the poffertjes kraam just opened yesterday! After this, we drove past (the east side of) Amsterdam up to an old fisherman's (and touristy) town along the 'Zuiderzee' called Volendam. Here we walked around and Maria tasted her first Broodje Paling! Then we traveled up past some beautiful tulip fields in search of a Windmill. Luckily Marco's memory still worked and we found the one we wanted to visit. We went inside and saw how this mill really worked to pump water. Wow! After these exciting sights, we went on to visit with Jan and Marion (Marco's sister). Their yard is coming along great (Hmmm.. Nice yards must be a Smoorenburg thing...). We had a wonderful dinner and visit there, after which we went on to go to Opa's house. Along the way we drove over the man-made 'Afsluitdijk', which enabled The Netherlands to better control flooding and eventually gain more land from the 'Zuiderzee'.
